I saw the Nymi for real at the Bluetooth World conference today. I hadn’t fully copped as to how it works. Now I do. The band “knows you’re you” using your electrocardiogram (EKG). Apparently, your EKG is unique to you, and has a higher accuracy than retina scan, and is only slightly lower in accuracy than fingerprinting.
So how it works is: in the morning, when you wake up, you touch the wristband for three seconds. After that, you’re authenticated. The band now knows “you’re you”.
It then uses BLE (Bluetooth Smart) to connect to other things through your day. Your laptop can automagically open as you approach it - to take a simple example.
If you take the band off - the authentication stops. So - if it’s stolen or you lose it - it won’t do squat. There are lots of potential use cases - from security, access, payment, and others. I’d expect in particular to see their technology get embedded in to other things - such as watches.
